Exterior rearview mirrors with low weight and reduced costs

Mirror adjustment housings are built to last with Arnite XT polyethylene terephthalate (PET). This high-performance portfolio of thermoplastics meets the lightweight and durable needs of the automotive industry by providing superior dimensional stability, durability and unsurpassed batch-to-batch consistency.

For its MR5 range of mirror adjustment housings, Magna Auteca was seeking a replacement for polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) that improved the durability performance of this new application.

Through more than a year of intensive testing during the validation period, Arnite XT outperformed PBT, polyamide 66 (PA66), polyphthalamide (PPA) and competitive PET products on every single test, due to its high dimensional stability, stiffness and strength, and excellent wear and friction properties. Arnite XT was selected as the material of choice for Magna’s mirror adjustment housings, making the part lighter than the original aluminum design and more durable than the PBT replacement.

The result: A more durable part that contributes to lower carbon footprint (less weight equals less fuel consumption).
